Theories and Methods of Foreign Language Teaching: Project-Based Learning

Abstract

This writing aims at describing Project-Based Learning in terms of definition, main characteristics and the roles of teachers and students. In addition, the author would like to illustrate a lesson plan of PBL at Vo Nguyen Giap Gifted High School. Finally, it concludes with some suggestions for the application. Hopefully, this writing may be a useful reference document for the trainee teachers to have a better understanding and suitable application in their future teaching practice.

Introduction

In recent years, English has been an international language which plays an important part in creating mutual understanding, promoting science and technology development as well as consolidating relationships among countries. It is the vital role of English that results in the increasing demand for teaching and learning it all over the world and our country is not an exception. Learning a language is not simply a way of imitation. It is the process in which students gain knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes from information and experience (Cobb, as cited in Tyagi and Kannan (2013). He regards the class as a stage where the teacher accompanied by his students is performers. The purpose of teaching is to concentrate on every aspect of learning and enable students to practise theoretical knowledge and also apply the 21st century skills to overcome the complexities of the world. Thus, Project- Based Learning (PBL) has been found to address the needs of teaching and learning process in the modern society.
